Background of the study
Mentorship programs in school libraries have emerged as innovative approaches to cultivating a robust reading culture among students. In Gboko, Benue State, these programs pair experienced readers or librarians with students to foster reading habits, critical analysis skills, and a lifelong appreciation for literature (Ogbonna, 2023). Through interactive sessions, book clubs, and guided reading activities, school library mentorship programs provide personalized support that encourages students to explore diverse literary genres and develop independent reading practices. This mentorship not only improves literacy levels but also builds self-confidence and academic competence. Research indicates that structured mentorship in libraries can lead to enhanced reading engagement and improved academic performance (Eze, 2024). However, factors such as insufficient mentor training, limited program duration, and lack of systematic follow-up can undermine the effectiveness of these initiatives. This study evaluates the effectiveness of school library mentorship programs in promoting a reading culture among students in Gboko by assessing program outcomes, identifying challenges, and proposing strategies to strengthen mentorship efforts (Adeniran, 2023).

Statement of the problem
Despite the implementation of school library mentorship programs in Gboko, the impact on cultivating a reading culture remains inconsistent. Challenges such as inadequate mentor preparation, limited session frequency, and resource constraints contribute to a less-than-optimal promotion of reading habits among students. These issues hinder the full realization of the potential benefits of mentorship programs. This study seeks to assess these challenges and recommend improvements to enhance the effectiveness of mentorship in fostering a strong reading culture (Ibrahim, 2024).
